Ben Whittaker is the headline act in Liverpool on Saturday night — not quite the way Matchroom had planned it, but an opportunity he will be relishing regardless. With Callum Smith forced out through injury, the unbeaten “Surgeon” steps up to top the bill at the M&S Bank Arena against Argentinian power puncher Braian Suarez in a 10-round light heavyweight contest live on DAZN. April 18 is Whittaker’s chance to make a statement in front of a prime-time audience, and the Boxing Data numbers give us plenty to work with in assessing how this fight plays out.

Ben Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs) is arguably British boxing’s most technically gifted active light heavyweight. The 28-year-old Birmingham product — a silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics — has spent four years building his professional career methodically under Eddie Hearn’s watch, and the WBC’s number three ranking tells you the sanctioning bodies are paying attention.
At 6’3” with a 75” reach and an orthodox stance, Whittaker is built for the light heavyweight division. He fights like a surgeon: picking shots, controlling distance, rarely walking into danger. The headline record of seven knockouts from ten wins (70%) is slightly misleading — most of his early finishes came against journeymen — but last December’s first-round demolition of Benjamin Gavazi at Birmingham’s NEC showed genuine hurt in his hands when given the opening.
The one blemish on his record remains the October 2024 Technical Decision draw with Liam Cameron in Riyadh — a fight halted mid-round — which he emphatically corrected with a second-round TKO of Cameron in Birmingham the following April. Eddie Hearn has been vocal about not rushing him towards David Morrell just yet. Saturday is the next step on that road.

Braian Suarez (21-4, 20 KOs) is a fighter that a certain type of analyst dismisses too quickly. The 34-year-old Argentinian has an extraordinary 95% knockout rate — 20 finishes from 21 wins — and has fought and been stopped by some dangerous opposition in Russia and the UK. He’s been KO’d by Lyndon Arthur in Bolton and stopped by Sharabutdin Ataev in Chelyabinsk, but between those setbacks he’s been picking people apart at home in Buenos Aires. At 6’0” he has a genuine height disadvantage against Whittaker, and his reach will be shorter — but in a power puncher’s game, those numbers only matter until one lands clean.
His last five fights include two TKO wins and a UD loss to Vasily Voytsekhovsky in Russia (July 2025). He is not a manufactured opponent. He is a live underdog.

This is a clash of styles as much as it is a clash of records. Whittaker fights with patience and precision — he uses his reach to box from the outside, picks his moments, and has the footwork and reflexes of an Olympic-level amateur. Suarez operates on pure attrition: he keeps coming, throws big, and relies on the reality that one clean shot at light heavyweight can end any fight.
The question the Boxing Data analytics raise is about Suarez’s activity levels under pressure. His wins tend to come against opponents who stand in front of him — when he faced Voytsekhovsky (a technical fighter) he lost on points. Whittaker’s jab and movement are likely to replicate those conditions. Suarez’s three losses in the last three years have all come against fighters with good ring generalship. That’s the pattern Whittaker is built to exploit.
The danger for Whittaker is exactly what it is for any technically gifted fighter: one moment of complacency at light heavyweight. Suarez doesn’t need to outbox him. He needs one right hand to land flush — and over 10 rounds, that’s not impossible.
Ben Whittaker wins if:
Braian Suarez wins if:
Odds: Whittaker 1/16 (-1700) · Suarez 15/2 (+750)
The market has this right. Suarez’s KO rate is genuine and he’s not here for a payday — he’ll be looking to land something big. But Whittaker’s combination of southpaw-shredding jab, exceptional footwork, and increasingly refined power should be too much over 10 rounds. Look for a mid-to-late TKO stoppage as Whittaker’s accuracy compounds and Suarez’s activity slows.
